Adina Lawrence

Visual Arts –Photographer

Adina Lawrence is a Black British portrait photographer from Stoke on Trent. She uses fantasy and metaphor to create colourful and striking images. A graduate in photojournalism, her approach to portraiture is to implement a fantasy-like feel, creating flamboyant, conspicuous and stimulating images. She captures and presents her subjects as metaphorical statements rather than still subjects, and each portrait tells a story.

As part of Kwanzaa Collective UK Adina has exhibited as part of ‘Strong, British and Black’, Face: In Honour of Francis Barber and ‘Our Caribbean Carnival’. She has talked about her work publicly and facilitated a range of workshops such as ‘Photoshoot on a Budget’

With her experience as a mental health worker, art facilitator and Autism learning disabilities specialist keyworker for the NHS, she has supported a Sew and Tell course at NORSACA and Cultural Coffee morning for Black and Brown parents with children who have additional needs. Adina was part of the Kwanzaa Collective UK ‘Behind The Line’ team that worked closely with frontline workers to explore themes of care during the Covid-19 pandemic. In 2022 she worked alongside Kwanzaa Collective UK poet and curator Prea Kaur on the exhibition ‘The Body and I’. The exhibition examined and explored body negativity and positivity as well as the mind’s relationship to bodies and food.
