Laura Mae Williams

Visual Arts –  Photographer, Filmmaker and Graphic Designer.

Laura Mae uses oil painting to explore matters of the heart, focusing primarily on the connections between material culture and identity. She is interested in how personal possessions can contribute to our identity and sense of self, and how our identity can manifest within our possessions. Laura Mae combines still-life and portraiture, utilising a colourful and distorted painting style to invoke feelings of nostalgia tangled with unease that invites the audience to examine their relationships with their possessions. Her works combine magic realism with melancholy, using bright colours to present a ‘fairytale-esque’ atmosphere. Laura’s fascination with objects and her ability to make deep personal connections with them reflect her neurodivergence. She hopes to celebrate her obsessions and share them with the audience.

Born in 2001 in Karlsruhe, Germany Laura Mae lives and works in Staffordshire, England. Laura studied BA Fine Art at Staffordshire University, Stoke-on-Trent, graduating in 2023 with a First Class. 

Laura Mae’s painting ‘Outsider’ won the Three Counties Exhibition ‘Art Studio Prize’ and was shortlisted as one of the ‘Audience Choice Award’ winners. Outsider was selected by the judges for its poignant subject matter, technique and sensitive colour palette. Many of Laura Mae’s self-portraits explore themes of identity and feelings of being an outsider. This interest comes from growing up mixed-race and dual nationality (non-British) in a majority white area. In her paintings, Laura aims to create a communal space for those who feel like outsiders and also call upon others to think about how our society could be more inclusive. Her preferred medium is oil paints however, more recently she has taken an interest in Risograph printing and Zine-making. 

Since graduating Laura Mae has facilitated workshops with Kwanzaa Collective UK, assisted with Six Towns Carnival costumes and has been a set decorator and assistant art director as part of Staffordshire Film Collective ( LINK :  https://www.staffordshirefilmcollective.com/who-we-are )
